How can I stop Snoring?

Ratdaddy asked:

Does anyone know a natural way to stop, or at least reduce snoring? I really don’t want to take drugs, but if there is a special matress, pillow, etc. that I can buy, please tell me.

I cannot sleep on my stomach. I always end up on my side or back.

How to stop Snoring:

1. Sleep on your side. Snoring is more likely if you’re lying on your back.

2. Lose weight. Excess body weight, especially around the neck, puts pressure on the airway, causing it to partially collapse.

3. Avoid alcohol and tranquilizers. Alcohol and sleeping pills can depress your central nervous system and relax the muscles of your throat and jaw, making snoring more likely. These substances are also known to contribute to sleep apnea, a dangerous condition that has been linked with cardiovascular disease.

4. Get your allergies treated. Chronic respiratory allergies may cause snoring by forcing sufferers to breathe through their mouths while they sleep. Taking a decongestant or antihistamine before bedtime may help. If your nose is blocked, try using over-the-counter saline spray or a humidifier to prevent snoring.

5. Buy a mouth guard. Your dentist or doctor may be able to prescribe an anti-snoring mouth guard that holds the teeth together and keeps the lower jaw muscles from becoming too lax.

6. Stop smoking. Smoke damages the respiratory system.

7. Keep a regular schedule. Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day.

8. See a doctor if you are pregnant and snoring. Women who are pregnant will sometimes begin to snore. The snoring may rob the baby of oxygen, so pregnant women who snore should talk to the doctor about it.

9. Elevate your head. Sleeping with your head raised may take some of the pressure off the airway, making breathing easier and reducing snoring. Raise the head of the bed by putting blocks under the bed posts, or prop yourself up with pillows.

Get a bed-partner with a sharp elbow and a shrill voice. My wife broke my rib and my snoring habit , convinceing me to have that minor surgery.

Oh Ratdaddy, you need to see a sleep specialist as soon as possible! Excessive snoring can lead to so many illnesses. i snored so loud the windows would rattle, and I am female, not over weight, no breathing problems in the past. It was so bad my husband and I slept in separate rooms, which is a bummer! I have tried every gadget I could find, spent hundreds of dollars on those stupid contraptions, potions, lotions, strips, creams and still no avail. Finally I went to a sleep clinic. They hooked me up, and when I went to sleep, I stopped breathing 45 times within the first hour…I guess is bad, cause they came in and hooked me up to a machine called a C-PAP machine. My gosh, i thought I had died and gone to heaven! It was like a refreshing light breezy mist was blowing on my face and into my lungs….I slept like a rock and the snoring stopped. I thought it would be hard to adapt to the machine at home, as it has a hose, and a mask, or you can get just the tube type, like oxygen. It has made such a difference. i am not tired anymore, my husband is not tired anymore, and I am back in the bed with him, he says I look like his little snuffleluptopuss, sic, oh well it works. Anyway, people that do not get enough oxygen at night, have greater chances of heart attack, when you snore and stop breathing you heart has to work extra hard to catch up…you need to get all the information on Sleep Apena and Narcolepsy that you can, and run to the doctor, I do not take sleeping pills, just me and my machine and water, it was a Godsend, trust me you won’t be sorry you went! Good luck.
